My first horse, what i need to learn?

I always wanted a horse, i take lessons now and i'm getting a job soon so i can get money. I want to try to adopt a horse, so it's about $500. How much is tack roughly? I ride english, i already have a helmet, boots, pants, and gloves so thats no a problem..

I dont have a barn :( so i would be boarding, so that would be around 200-400 a month, do I have to supply the hay and food or would that come with it?

Any tips or anything, i would love to hear anything. Thanks so much!

Its great that you want a horse, and that you are taking lessons!!! Also, planning this before you make the big buy!!!

Here is a little chart I have created for you:

Horse:

You can find horses for free sometimes!!!

Try http://www.equine.com or http://www.petfinder.com . They have TONS of horses for free!!!Pretty good ones too!!!

Tack:

Tack can be a bit pricey.

Boarding:

Yes, $200-$500 (Price varies for every stable.)

In most stables, no. You don't have to supply the food and water.

You better start looking at the stables available. See what there prices are, and the services they have. Make sure it is really close to your house.(Within an hour.)

Good Luck!!!
Reply:tack for english is about 200 for saddle, and for a briddle about 50-60 halters run about 20-30. before u get a horse u HAVE to know the medical history or ur gonna be in trouble. and usually when boarding the hay/feed comes with the boarding. u dont have to get it.
Reply:Usually when you are paying 200-400 dollars a month it should include cleaning of the stalls, feed, water, grain, as well as turn out and turn in.
Reply:if you are boarding, most places supply the hay and grain or feed.
Reply:ask most likely a stable asking 200 or something includes feed water and clean stalls so ask what that includes.

Reply:Glad to hear you are saving up for your first horse! Now the cost...it good that you have all the equipment for yourself. For your horse now, I would recommend purchasing used tack in good condition. There's no need for all brand new things right now. So the best place for used tack would be your local tack consignment store or ebay (where I go!). I was able to purchase a nice general purpose english saddle for around $200 and a bridle for $15. They might go for a little more or a little less depending on the brand and the condition. As long as the board is a FULL board, and not a ROUGH board, the barn will provide feed and hay. A rough board is where all they provide is the shelter and you have to do everything else yourself (provide feed, hay, muck, turnout, etc.) However, you need to ask whether or not they cover the farrier, annual vaccinations and vet check ups and teeth floating too. If not, the farrier is going to be approx. $50 every 6 weeks and the vet cost depends on what vaccines you get. Teeth floating is any from $50 to $150 (that I've seen) and needs to be done either twice a year or once a year depending on your horse. Any, hope this gives you a better idea and good luck with everything!
