Horses at a funeral?

A police officer was killed in BG Kentucky last week. At his funeral was a uniformed police officer riding backwards on a horse. I understand the boot of the fallen officer to be placed in the sturips but I don't understand the rider. Can anyone explain the significancy of the rider being backwards??

Horses at a funeral?
should have killed the horse and fed the USA homeless.
Reply:I think it represents him looking back and never being able to do his job again or the uniformed police officer is the fallen police officer saying farewell to his comrades.
Reply:hrm, sorry i did know about the boots being placed in the stirrups but not the backwards rider...
