What are gaiters?

I was at some horse stable and they had some kind of leg protection for their horses and they called them gaiters or something like that. There were two taller boots on the front legs and shorter boots on the hind legs. They used these for when they were riding and excercising their horses. What exactly are they for? and what kind of disciplines are they used for?

What are gaiters?
I think I know what you mean but I can't find any reference to them. They are like a really close fitting support boot - like brushing boots or sports medicine boots and are supposed to offer more support to tendons and joints without the bulk - look at stretch 'n' flex wraps and you'll see what I mean.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Edit - all I can find online is some things to stop you losing hoof boots if they come off.
Reply:Well Gaiters are like leather chaps for a person but i know that Tendon Boots help like Polo Wraps.
Reply:In the US, gaiters are usually half chaps worn by riders.
Reply:Gaiters are an extension of short riding boots to maker them look and act (gripwise) like long boots. They reach the bottom of the knee.
Reply:The gaiters that I've seen are used to provide cushioning %26amp; traction. I've seen them used to take the place of shoes %26amp; apparently last longer.

I think most people use gaiters if they will be on rough terrain, or will be competing in long distance events. It seems as though a fair amount of Endurance riders use them because they are lighter, and if one would fall off, you can just put it back on.
Reply:gaiters that i heard of are a few things.

1. Riding boots(liek field boots but similar)
