If you wear jeans insdead of breeches to you get leg rubs?

I ride western and have always worn jeans, but I will start english lessons pretty soon and need to know if it is okay to wear jeans insdead of breeches. I don't want to get leg rubs but can't I just wear half chaps? What type of boots do I need? I've seen people wear boots almost knee high, do you always have to buy the kind that high, or will it be exceptable if I use a boot that is up to my ankle? And one last thing, what is the difference between breeches and jodpurs(If that is spelled correct)

If you wear jeans insdead of breeches to you get leg rubs?
many girls at the show barn i ride at wear paddock boots, half chaps and jeans.

paddock boots- these are like lace up western ankle boots, with an english flair, but also come in zipper up form.

http://www.doversaddlery.com/ariat-herit... they will be uncomfortable without halfchaps.

halfchaps- these come knee high and you wear them w/ paddock boots. they have the look of tall boots and you can comfortabley wear jeans with them. http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp...

tall boots - come knee high, very fitted in leg, comfortable, used mainly for shows, jeans don't fit with them.http://www.doversaddlery.com/ariat-herit...

breeches- these are the tight, usually beige pants english riders where, they don't always go ankle lenght (sometimes midcalf) and go with tall boots. or if you wear knee socks with them you can wear them with paddock boots and half chaps.

jodhpurs- these are little kid forms of breeches. they go to ankle lenght and are used only w/ a paddock boot, not half chaps. these are for little kid showing.
Reply:my legs get pinched in the stirrup leathers so i always wear half chaps if i don't wear breeches. i really like my big tall english boots, but paddock boots work fine too, just not for show. i honestly don't know the difference between breeches and jodpurs because i've never used jodpurs before.
Reply:you can wear paddoc boots with half chaps if you want. i wore jeans for a wile, you do not let leg rubs, but i always wore tight jeans. i like breeches better though, they give you better grip. you could also get schooling tights or jodhpurs if breeches are too expensive.

Reply:I used to gallop 15 to 20 race horses a day. When the weather was cool, I wore full chaps. I didn't have 1/2 chaps, so when the weather was too warm for my full chaps, I would wear a pair of panty hose, under my jeans, and it would keep me from getting the insides of my knees, rubbed raw. Panty hose are far cheaper than a pair of 1/2 chaps, and work perfectly.
Reply:I prefer riding in breeches and tall boots/half chaps because I find it more comfortable. Sometimes I ride in just jeans (which I don't really like, because my pants leg always rides up my ankle) or in jeans and half-chaps (which I don't mind). You can experiment and find your preference.

How old are you? The general rule for showing is 12 and under wears paddock boots and jod straps, and 13 and up wears tall boots. If you aren't going to show, just wear the boots that you use for western riding. You can wear half chaps over those if you'd like.

Jodhpurs are meant for kids who wear paddock boots. They have a cuff at the bottom and a little elastic strap. Breeches are meant for people who wear tall boots. They usually have a velcro closure or inner elastic cuff (not like the jodhpurs, this one's just to keep the leg from riding up).
Reply:YOU NEED HALF CHAPS! trust me, i was stupid enough not to were them and i got the world biggest rash on mu leg from pinching from the stirrup leathers :S oh and you can wear jeans with half chaps if you want, i do all the time, but somtime they get really unforterble and the buttons on the back of the jean might mark the saddle, just warning you. have fun in you english lesson!
Reply:You can wear half chaps with jeans and paddock boots.

Breeches come down below your knee, but jodphurs are made to go over paddock boots and strap underneath paddock boots. Unless you are under 12, I don't suggest jodphurs.

If you plan on doing English, I would invest in a good pair of boots and a couple of breeches.
Reply:Jeans, i find, are really uncomfortable to ride in but plenty of people do. The best for me is a comfy pair of jods (the ones that go with short boots) or breeches (they have velcro on the bottom and are slightly shorter and go with long boots) are the best witth half chaps. There is no need for long leather boots for daily schooling etc, leave them to competitions. Really, just wear what is comfiest for you. I often ride in tracky bottoms and chaps when I'm feeling a bit slobby!
Reply:I ride english and where all types of jeans, though I have found ones with stretch work much better. I have never gotten leg rubs nor have any of my friends who all wear jeans when they ride. All you need to ride english effectively are paddock boots (mine are actually western paddock boots with fringe on the toe I get laughed at when I'm schooling at shows oh well!) and half chaps. The tall boots or field boots that you see are typically for showing, though some people use their older pairs for schooling in.

As for the jods verses breeches, jods are typically what young children ride and show in.
Reply:Breeches and jods are made for English riding. Riding western was made by American cowboys so that they were comfortable. In English you will be posting and kicking and adjusting your legs alot more and so jeans would be very uncomfortable they are heavier and trust me you will chafe in places you did not know could chafe!!!

For staring English a pair of jodphurs (long riding pants), half chaps and jodpur boots. These are short boots made for wearing with half chaps and jodphurs.

Breeches are for mostly showing and worn with the tall boots. They end at just under the knee and are worn with socks and teh "super talll" boots. They are usually pretty expensive and are not meant to be worn everyday.

Hope I could help!
Reply:I've always worn jeans unless showing or when I was forced to wear breeches at college. I've never had leg rubs and I don't wear half chaps either. You have to look at the inseam on the jeans. Levis are great for working in and wear well but they have huge inseams. I find Old Navy jeans are the best to work and ride in, cheap, hard wearing and have very small inseams. I wear zip up Ariat boots with mine.
Reply:okay. i ride english so ill help u:

jeans are fine, but they should not be worn every time. i started using breeches and they are much better, because they are made just for riding.

half chaps work GREAT!! :-) i use them all the time. but they are hard to get on if ur going to wear bellbottoms trust me bc i have learned that the hard way!!

well the boots it depends on how old u r. if ur an adult then it doesnt matter, but while ur just starting, just get the boots that go up about a few inches above the ankle. most people that have tall boots are over 13 and show.

breeches-these are basically chaps i have just never heard them called this lol :-P

jods-the riding pants usually seen in tan that stretch

hope i helped!!
Reply:I've just changes to western and one of the best things is not having to wear jodhs. If you wear jeans riding english your legs will get pinched by the stirrup leathers and also your jeans will ride up it just doesn't work. The inside seam will rub you too, jodhs don't have an inside leg seam. Breeches come down to just below your knee and are worn always with long boots. Jodhpurs come down to your ankles and are worn with short boots. You don't wear jodhs with long boots because they have a turnup and it won't go in the boot. Here in the UK it used to be only children wore jodhs and short boots, but more adults wear short boots now and use short chaps with them.
Reply:i ride in jeans all of the time no matter what discipline i am schooling my horse.

i always wear half chaps too though, this keeps my legs from getting rubbed raw. i wear simple paddock boots (up to my ankle yes)

jodhpurs are designed to go with short boots, while breeches are designed to go with long boots

hope this helps :)
Reply:I ride in jeans both western and english, but I have gotten some pretty bad leg rubs from the stirrup leather when I ride english. It caused a pretty good sore, and a scar. So if you're trying to avoid that I would wear jeans that aren't loose or get some type of breeches.
Reply:I compete in both english and western. Somedays I ride a several horses english or western. I wear walmart brand jeans. I don't get leg rubs at all.

Nothing wrong with half chaps, I find it supports a bit for my knee. You don't have to have the tall english boots, you can get paddock boots and wear half chaps. Thats a cheap route if you have big calfs like I do. I have a pair of custom tall boots for shows and I wear either my paddock boots with half chaps or my Justins. Ariets, Justin are very good brands.
Reply:I've ridden dressage for years, and I always wear jeans. Hell, sometimes I wear shorts! However, real denim prevents your body from flexing in ways that you need in english riding. Stretch jeans are perfect, though.

Also, it depends on your trainer. Some trainers require standard english clothes in lessons. See what some of her other students wear, first. As a rule, whenever I do clinics, I dress nicely in breeches with half chaps. If i'm riding with a new trainer, I think it shows respect. with my regular trainer, we are on a more comfortable basis and jeans are suitable.

there is no difference between breeches and jods, but there are many types of different selections. Full seat, half seat, blah blah blah. I find that they make no difference, although cataloges might tell you differently :)

As for boots, tradition enlgish rule is that children under the age of, um i think 13, are only allowed paddock boots while older people may wear long boots. Personally, i think high boots are hell and the effort to put them on and take them off is way too much for times when I'm not in a show. Paddock boots would be the professional choice. If you don't have any, any type of hard toed barn boot is fine.

When you're not taking a lesson, you're basically free to wear whatever. Like I said, I wear shorts. Sometimes I ride barefoot. :)
Reply:Breeches allow you a better feel of the horse. They also eliminate the "cheat" factor of wearing chaps, which keep you from sliding around. For schooling you can alternate between half chaps, full chaps (lots of hunter/jumper rider wear them to school in), stretch jeans and breeches. You will be surprised by how much "better" you ride when wearing more formal attire. English stirrups allow a much greater feel of the horse then do the gigantic western stirrups which inhibit your sensitivity of the horse and do not allow for any kind of movement because they are so big and stiff. Jeans are for on the farm riding only...and sometimes can make your whole ride sloppy. They are too casual. But if you are pressed for time and are wearing jeans, you can take either a pair of polo wraps or ace bandages and wrap the jeans smooth on your lower leg, so they do not bunch up. In the show ring, Jodpurs and paddock boots are generally for children under 12. See how you like english riding before you invest too much money in boots and britches...they ARE an investment!!!
Reply:Wearing jeans and half chaps is fine. I hate wearing breeches in the winter or on muddy days just because of their light colors, and well horses arent exactly the cleanest things on earth. If your just starting english I suggest paddock boots just because their easier, and knee high boots are expensive. Although there are cheaper rubber ones they really restrict your movement, so I don't suggest them for anything other than muddy feilds. Breeches are for tall boots and jodpurs have straps that go on the paddock boot. Kinda like chaps but its only a strap. It's also okay just to wear breeches, paddock boots and half chaps. Btw don't wear bright colored panties. :O
Reply:you should probably wear half chaps with jeans your legs dont always get rubbed but there is the other times when they do so i recommend half chaps with jeans or riding pants
Reply:i ride hunt seat (english) and i wear jeans. almost no one at my barn does ride in breeches. and they all ride hunt or saddle seat (both english types of riding). so its fine. we all wear ankle high boots
